Christian Okeke wasn't among the record-setters for Rider's Class 4A state silver medalists, but the junior certainly made his mark on this season.

Okeke was named the District 9-4A Most Valuable Player. He scored 38 goals, including two at the UIL State Tournament last weekend, and also had 18 assists.

Rider's record-setting defense was led all year by 9-4A Goalkeeper of the Year Drake Szczepinski.

The Raiders didn't win gold, but they set school and state record for shutouts (25) and a school record for wins (28).

Szczepinski was the starting goalie for all of those. He tied Sean Gill's school record with 44 shutouts.

Szczepinski, Okeke and Ruben Flores were named to the Class 4A State All-Tournament team.

Other 9-4A special honors went to Jonathan Munoz as the Defensive MVP and Gainesville's Giovanni Carranza as the Offensive MVP.

Juan Alvarez of Decatur is the Newcomer of the Year. Rider's Josh Hill and Decatur's Nick Stokes shared Coach of the Year honors.

Hill also was named a coach in the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Senior Showcase. He'll get to coach three Rider players one last time in that match — Szczepinski, Munoz and Flores.

The all-star game will be held at Southwestern University in Georgetown at 1 p.m. on May 12.

Nelson holds off Lady Coyotes

Wichita Falls can't recover from 3-0 deficit

By Zach Duncon Times Record News
April 7, 2012

DENTON —The Wichita Falls High School girls soccer team achieved the first and most crucial step of erasing a daunting halftime deficit — scoring quickly.

Trailing Byron Nelson High School by three goals Friday night in the Region I-4A sectional round, the Lady Coyotes found the back of the net just 21 seconds after intermission.

But Sierra Anderson's goal, which occurred after a scrum in front of the Nelson net, would be the match's final tally as the Lady Bobcats claimed a 3-1 victory at Collins Stadium.

Nelson (20-2-4) advances to the regional quarterfinals in only its second season competing at the varsity level, while WFHS finishes at 15-7-1.

Nelson's Lynnsey Brim scored in the third and 26th minutes and Spencer McCoy drilled a first-half free kick, allowing the Lady Bobcats to take control early.

However, the Lady Coyotes didn't go away quietly, putting a scare into Nelson despite failing to close the gap.

"That's just the way my team is — they didn't stop. Being down three goals, you very easily could walk into halftime with your head down and not come out, just give up," WFHS coach Rob Woodard said. "My girls don't do that. They never have. That's something I'm very proud of them for.

"It shows a lot of their character and the senior leadership that I have. I have nine wonderful seniors on my team, and they left it all on the field tonight."

Less than five minutes after Anderson's goal, the Lady Coyotes generated another quality chance that could have really made the contest interesting.

Anderson sent the ball across the Nelson net, but neither Cassidy Beer nor Shannon Spruiell were able to get off a quality shot.

Margaux Clark and Loudell Crumpler also had good looks on free kicks. Nelson goalie Ariana Morrison snagged Clark's attempt and watched Crumpler's shot in the last minute sail a foot over the target.

"When they got the first goal, that changed everything," Nelson coach Phillip Salyer said. "The momentum shifted, and they had a great half. We were able to weather the storm a little bit. If we could have gotten one, that might have sealed it, but they kept fighting."

The WFHS defense, which had its hands full with Brim and forward Marchelle Davis, tightened up in the second half. Victoria Franco blocked a potential goal with her body, and goalie Alex Cowsert snuffed out Brim's breakaway chance in the 70th minute.

Entering the match, Woodard knew that juniors Brim, Davis and Alexa Bain possessed the speed and size combination to create problems against anyone. They made a quick impact against the Lady Coyotes.

Brim had a nice strike 2:16 into the match and then scored on a give-and-go pass from Davis to put Nelson in front, 2-0.

McCoy's blast from 33 yards out with 5:29 left in the half enabled the Lady Bobcats to feel comfortable, but that changed with Anderson's goal.

Anderson had Old High's best scoring chances in the first half, too. The senior's attempt from near the touch line glanced off the crossbar, one of three shots Anderson had on goal in the first 40 minutes.

Although the Lady Coyotes' season ended three rounds shy of last year's run to the regional finals, Woodard called it a phenomenal year and raved about his girls' cohesiveness.

"The girls wanted to get back there, and they knew they had a shot," the WFHS coach said. "Things just go our way tonight. But I would not trade this team for any other team around."
